Smallville to loose two of it's central characters.

For Smallvilles next season (it's eighth) both Lex Luthor (Rosenbaum) and Lana Lang (Kreuk) will not be renewing there contracts as full time cast members and dropping down to a guest starring role.

It has been rumoured for some time that Rosenbaum (not really a rumour, he has been saying this for months) will not be coming back for season eight as a main character and he will be missed. He is easily one of the most engaging actors on the show.

The big surprise is Kristen Kreuk. There was no indication that she was not coming back. But I guess the appeal of the big screen and maybe other TV shows are just too hard to resist. No one can argue that she is a stellar actress, but she of course brought a certain appeal to the show.

What this does mean is that the infinitely recycled Clark/Lana plot might finally get resolved conclusively, something that has grated me for many seasons now. This might also mean that other peripheral characters might get more screen time, such as Green Arrow. This is good news.

So now we shall just have to wait and see and keep an eye on the CW networks flagship genre show, maybe this will herald an improvement in the palatability of the show.
